About

Little Pieces of History

Just over thirty years ago, a local musician and teacher Jane Miller, invited like-minded people to a meeting in her home, convinced that a town the size of Arbroath could support a mixed voice choir.  The response to her approaches to those she thought might be interested was greater than anticipated and so the modern day Arbroath Choral Society was founded;  our first rehearsal took place on Sunday 19 February 1978.   In these early days, Jane was ably assisted by her husband Kenneth in founding the Society.

Since its foundation, the ACS has had two fine Musical Directors, several excellent accompanists and a series of committed and enthusiastic committee officials, helpers and members, all of them bringing a wide range of music and enjoyment to the local community.

A mixed voice choir, The Choral Union, had been previously active in Arbroath up to 1934.  The Choral Union was formed in the late 1850s according to J M McBain n his book “Arbroath Past & Present” written and published in 1887.
